From a Seattle Times article [seattletimes.nwsource.com], "Amazon.com yesterday agreed to buy China's largest online bookstore Joyo.com for $75 million, marking the Seattle-based online retailer's sixth international market."

As stated in the article, this is a long terms move and it would seem a good one in that inherit with the purchase an established distribution system, perhaps the largest obstacle to overcome when servicing the national market.

"Joyo.com has fulfillment centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou servicing 30 markets."

Could Amazon eventually become one of if not the major Ecomm force in China?

Just Curious , how viable is ecommerce in china , are people really buying stuff from the net?.

I am asking because i know there is a fundamental differnce in shopping habbits between westerners and chinese/indians . The former are already used to virtual shopping for decades because of Catlogs ...There are no catalog business in china or india and also asians want to touch and feel the product and love to do bargain hunting ...

So i highly doubt ecommerce will become a phenomenon in china or india except for intangible stuff's like air tickets or ring tones! ...
