It seems that Terra has agreed to the sale of Lycos to Daum on August 2. Here's the official press release [terranetworks.com] on the Terra site.

The execution of the sale and, as a consequence, the effective transfer of the stock, are, in accordance with the signed agreement, subject to the obtaining of any administrative authorisations that might be necessary, and in particular, to its express approval by the US authorities for the Defence of Competition or tacit approval once a period of 30 days has passed without any opposition.

hey all...sorry I'm not around recently....work and industry happenings are just too much to keep up with reporting here without having a stroke (I'm more active on the local side lately).......

that said....
As predicted, LYCOS announced its "new" service called LYCOS "CIRCLES" (well, new in the US ^^)

this basically IS cyworld (without a lot of the bells&whistles--which I am sure they can and will add as things progress with it).

Again for quick review....cyworld is a "mini-home page" community system ("mini-home p" as they call it here) that is wildly popular here in Korea (its has about 10 million verifiably unique members. Remember, that's in a TOTAL Korean population of about 48 million. So, its impressive.) DAUM the owner of Lycos has a competitive system called PLANET, but cyworld was first and biggest.

However, Daum made the first move outside the Korea and it seemed clear that Daum was going to use Lycos as a platform to try this (mini-home-p) model out Stateside....and now...

here it is!

I haven't dug into yet to do a one-to-one comparison and see how well they translated it culturally (don't really have much time nowadays). :(

but it is interesting, imo and think it should be an area to keep watching. It MAAAAAY become the "next big thing" portal-wise. ;)

I wouldn't be very surprised if it did and became lycos's vehicle back into the top portal race.

yikes! took a quick look and WOW this is barebones compared to korean stuff......still they have a treasure trove of features they can add if it starts picking up. we'll see.

Thanks for the update Grendel...sorry for not adding more to the thread. You seem to have the best grip on this one, so you end up talking to yourself a bit. Regardless, it's appreciated. :)

I took a quick spin through the Circles [circles.lycos.com] examples and I'm getting an idea of what you're talking about here. I could see the attraction as it's almost like your own blog/portal almost. This could catch on, even in the US...you never know. ;)

lycos was for sale.
other search engines were not and probably never will be.

if they have the money, its the only chance the are going to get.
