Ebay might come back to Japan

Online marketplace eBay Inc. has no immediate plans to reenter Japan, but also has not written Asia's biggest online auction market out of its expansion plans, Chief Executive Meg Whitman said on Friday.

We have no firm intentions there, but if we are to fulfill our vision of a global trading platform, ultimately we will have to have something in Japan," Whitman told Reuters in an interview at eBay's annual seller conference in New Orleans.

I read that too, but it didn't sound like they have much of a Japan strategy in place. They ran out of here with their proverbial tail between their legs. It's going to be extremely tough for them to come back.

It sounds like they have better plans for China and India than here. They correctly point out that those markets will have to do a lot more developing before they'll be of value to them. Japan was a more mature market and Yahoo simply put their name-brand recognition into play and blew them away.
