The leading search engines are Baidu and google (simplified Chinese). Top directories include sina, sohu, 163, yahoo China.

english, you forgot DMOZ which has Chinese version.:)
Warchild. If you are really considering to target Chinese market, 3721.com is another important traffic source you have to consider. 3721 is Chinese version of former Realnames and acquired by Yahoo! now.

Warchild, no, 3721 has its own technology. It surely will incorporate YST very soon. At present, I don't see YST technology in its serps. Baidu claims itself the largest search portal in China, and Google follows. There is another search engine called zhongsou.com, which is the former Huicong.com which powers most China portals, like Sina, Sohu, Nease, Tom, etc. Zhongsou's result is stale and totally hogwash, IMO.

Have to add that I don't like Baidu either. Their serps on hot searches look like overture's. Expect to see 30 ads before you see natural results.

Why bother? If you don't have content optomized in the local language then it's not much use to submit your site there.

It depends on what you plan to do. Just having one page might be enough depending on your product & service...however, you've got to have enough to convince the Chinese customer to part with their money. Sometimes that takes more than one page ;)
