I am thinking I called this one correctly. ;)
[webmasterworld.com...]

Rereading that, its really looking more and more like this...which in itself is interesting.

its a tight market out here, but on a huge scale. And things change and move pyscho speeds out here. I'll repeat what ZinguGuy said to me once...

Its better to think of Korea as a HUUGE, very wired, LOCAL market. Things move and innovate at local market paces, but on a huge scales since everyone is so wired and there 45 millionish people in this "local" market.

And you better play the game the "Korean way". Or you are gunna feel the burn. ;)

further, I said once that there was flare up against the ever more commercial searches (disappearing organic listings). Well, that pretty much ended as soon as it started. Instead of getting LOWER in the list, organic listings are just moving to new tabs/sections altogether. Bye bye traditional SEO! :-S

Now PPC is officially here in Korea...
--Zingu.com with its localized and more vertical PPC channels.
--OverKor continues with its original partners but I get an ever stronger vibe of difficulties in future because....
--GOOG is now officially making waves..now providing PPC for big guns EMPAS, mym, and others. (oh yea! btw, Goog EMPAS service launched quietly about a week ago or so ago.) HA! didn't see THAT reported anywhere! ;)

everyone is anxious to see if the BIG GREEN monster NHN goes its own route for PPC or goes with one of three PPCs Zingu, Goog, or Over.

I guess I'll check back when we know. ;)

SEM still has a LOONNNGG way to go here, but its catchin up REAL fast (and as per my other post....in some ways....already gone beyond what we see in the English speaking world.)

.......in the meantime....the Korean ppc wheel keeps on turning.
:D

====================================
PS. btw, bill challenged me to be first in the reporting....there was an article recently (in KOREAN) that headlined "Korea WiseN is the Googl of Korea" or something. To be clear, its a totally bs title to hook ppl. KWise is NOWHERE near the "goog of korea". The article was basically about Kwise revenues and profits doing well and being the number search engine SELLER (which included enterprize SE) or solution provider in Korea (which you only got if you read between the lines and were in the biz). Ever so, it honestly..ain't too big a deal and I doubt it is completely even accurate since it was a veeery loose definition of what category they were "number 1" in.....additionally that says nothing for being a popular seearch engine, which it in not even in the same galaxy as the big portals. go figure

lol oh well. what do you expect? its hard enough getting ppl to understand differences between search engines and SE sites, portals, SEO and PPC etc in developed markets much less here.

anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Interesting post Grendel. So SEO in Korea is dead, long live PPC? That was quick.

Could you tell us what EMPAS is? I'm not too clear on that service.

yikes! sorry about that....EMPAS is one of the big korean portals. I think its 100ish on the alexa global list (not that that means much).

Its like....number 3-5 in size and search volume here. NOTE: spots 2-5ish basicaly change all the time (in terms of search volume leaders) so I do'nt really keep up. Again with NHN (or Naver) way ahead at number search site in Korea.

Empas has some interesting search engines like "emotion search" and is gaining popularity in Knowledge Search.

Goog PPC links appear in the SECOND tier of sponsored link results in their main SERP.

Easy, it displays the results in a warm pink if you are feeling happy, and ...

OK, I'll shutup now.

What is it Grendel?

first note that this is where translation fails to communicate the intention.

literally its closest to "sensitivity" or "sensibility" or "emotional awareness" or "feeling" or the like. But I could spend a long time in describing why its not that either.

point is....its none of that in the english speaking sense. This feature is available I think on most of the portals here, but I believe empas was the first. NHN (Naver) certainly has one.

BASICALLY, what it is..is a search engine that searches through congratulatory or personal message pages (ie: portal version of hallmark cards) made on that portal for that specific reason. They are all one page fixed size, and made using that particular portals "feeling card" (for lack of a better term) web builder tools. Most of time they are completely done in Flash (!). I believe they only search through their own respective portals pages as well.

So, for example:

I want to congratulate bill on his japan SEM promotion or something...so I sign up at NHN, use their builder to make a one page emotion card (which happens to include cool stuff like beinging in FLASH or builders for add ons or sophisticated templates and other value added items), tell bill to search for "Congrats Bill!" on NHN...and boom! his page appears at the top of the SERP (followed by other search result listings like blog, knowledge etc.) Its so popular in fact (for some reason), it makes top emotion search ranking and everyone get to share in his happiness.

heh. or something. ~_^

There is a ranking (by DEGREE. as in this is "hot!" haha) next to the card to show some of the most popular cards made related. And other such search related tools you see on many SERP here.

ok...that's it for now.. I'm out to get a coffee. Feel free to send me an emotion search card while I'm gone. ^_^

I suppose its like Yahoo greeting-cards, but more "bells and whistles" (again) and with a dedicated search engine feature built around it.

They call it (phoentically) Gam-Sung PR. "sensitivity feeling PR". yes "PR", as in Public Relations....which is now a koreanified buzz word synomous with wanting to promote yourself or something here. In this case, usually promoting a person or event (generally, the most common seem to be congratulations or professing your love for someone.)

go figure.

new rule: Grendel can only post in the alternative Korean SERPS THREAD ;)

Somehow I could almost see that emotion search working in Japan. It's cutesy enough, but not enough Japanese are wired for that (a lot of people are wired at work and not home). I could see the younger people getting into that though.

<Trying to wrench this thread back somewhere close to its topic> Are all the traditional SEO types now just glorified bid-management houses? I guess SEM would probably entail payouts to a number of SEs & portals, but there's still got to be something out there for the people who can make compelling sites. How does the average person go about promoting their online creation?

lol you call that back on topic?!
<tisk tisk> lol ^^

I suppose we could start another thread.... Basics of SEO/SEM/SE promotion in Korea.

but "How?" does the average joe promote their site here is obviously a HUGE topic.....

one thing is clear: first and foremost, you have to suck up REGISTRATION FEES. If you don't pay upfront...you are not indexed AT ALL. ALL portals have a base fee registration. (Its PFI taken to the extreme.)...usually one time registration about USD$80 per portal. Cheaper for the directories, but mostly there too you gotta fork over the buck if you want in.

Yup, small market and very popular (if I've taught yall nothing else)...so they can get away with forcing everyone to pay registration fees.

just to cover all your basic portals....you are looking at $2000 easy just to get registered. Yikes!

man, I gotta make a forum just for this stuff. lol ;)

Are all the traditional SEO types now just glorified bid-management houses?

you'll have to get some other lurkers to answer give the best answer....but its looking more and more like that, especially as PPC gains steam here.

PPC Advertiser education has a LOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG way to go here yet.
