I suddenly found out that my website would need a way to process credit card/net banking/intl check and other payments. The payments could be from anywhere in the world, to a bank account in India.
Now, ccavenue seems to have good service. But they have high commissions, going upto 7% even. With 7% in cuts and 30% in tax, and other expenses, what does that leave you with?
But that's not what this post is about.
I would like to know if there are any alternatives to ccavenue. That is, can what ccavenue does, be done in house? Basically I need to do a buy/build decision.
I'm selling just a single service, and payment is requested after the service is rendered.

I dont think for an individual this is possible. Look at the amount of costs and tie ups involved. You would have to tie up with :-
1) HDFC Bank
2) ICICI Bank
3) Citibank
4) IDBI Bank
5) UTI Bank
6) Global Trust Bank
7) Centurion Bank
8) Federal Bank
9) Bank of Punjab
And thats just the internet banking feature. You are also talking about investing major amount in the techincal know how and setting up of your own payment gateway. You also need to buy a Verisign Certificate , get your own web server, etc etc.
The amount of logistics involved in building this whole setup is mind boggling.

There is a premium scheme which costs 5 % commissions and if you are a serious ecommerce business then you should opt for that scheme.
If you carefully study the whole system which CCAvenue has in place, it would take you 4 years and about 5 crores to do that. If you have that kind of money and patience then you can certainly build your own customized solution ;)
I think you can get a comparative analysis over here :-
