I was curious about the state of .IN domain names as I don't see them too often. I was shocked to learn that in a nation of over a billion people that only 6508 .IN domains [domain.ncst.ernet.in] have been registered. The prices didn't look too high to me. Why has the uptake of this domain space been so slow?

Bill , Until India liberalizes there address the registrations will reamin low.

They need to open up the second level for starters .. you cannot register .IN you must register .co.in or .net.in , .org.in

secondly this tupe of nonsense is preventing any interest at all in .IN

"1. The Domain Name CANNOT be a generic name such as seasons.co.in or wood.co.in etc. Instead you would need to register seasonsinfotech.co.in or woodtechnologies.co.in "

Stupid conditions and higher cost of .in names are two main reasons. At INR750/year a .co.in costs double of what a .com costs here in India.

Also .com is better known due to frequent references in the media about "dot com boom and bust" of 1999-2000.

Japan used to do that too. Their second level domains like .co.jp are still run with the old rules where a company is limited to exactly one domain name. It doesn't matter if you're Sony and have a million divisions, you can only have one .co.jp name. That kind of regulation here and extremely high prices were driving the .jp names into the ground. Everybody was going for .coms and other alternatives. Now that they've opened up the second level .jp TLD space there have been a lot more people picking up names.

Any talk of them deregulating the second level .in TLD?

Oh yeah it will get "deregulated" into second level ..just a matter of time.. .CN just opened up second level this past year as has .US and it's proven in every case that registrations rise interest rises actual use in the extesions rise and values in the extensions rise..

.JP prices still too high ..give it another few months so they can maximize their profits on all the great generic words ..then they'll lower the price.. thats if you are looking for words/ phrases , for a business name ..

If you are looking at it from a speculators view and you see some great generics still avaialble even at the higher prices ..buy wisely ..but buy anyways IMO

I have not seen anything related to that but when China and USA are doing something then people here tend to sit up and take notice of that.

...not if you can read Japanese and live in Japan they aren't ;) Those inflated prices you see on English registrar sites seem to have been set by some sort of cartel. You can get .JP names a lot cheaper.

I guess I'll have to hold off on my .in domain name buying spree, huh?
