Adwords is now showing on About.com Japan. The ad is placed on the bottom-middle of the page. Actually pretty poor location.... Top right side would be nicer :)
It's not clear how they choose which ads to publish. Any insight into this?

After checking a bit, I looks like ads are served with the Adsense program. They must be using about.com Japan to test Adsense for Japanese text.

I'm seeing what looks like AdWords at the top of the page in a Sponsored Links section. It looks like the top three AdWords, and then one from BIGLOBE. Is that what you're seeing? For example, for a search on the keyword "Hotel" in Japanese I get the following:
Sponsored Links
BIGLOBE
Google web results
Related Info
The related info has some miscellaneous stuff from BIGLOBE and JWord keywords. However I'm only seeing this for the real competitive KWs. There are a lot of KWs that still just pull up Google SERPs for me. They must be testing this out now. Good catch David.

I didn't really play with the search feature of About Japan. My experience is that most people dont use the search feature, or don't click on the ads served by it.
If you go to an About guide page (deeper linked), on the bottom of some are adsense ads.
