There was a thread a couple of months back on all of this, but it was too old to bring back to life.

I have heard, but cannot find any information on it, that co.jp domains have to hosted in Japan. Is this correct?
The company has an office in Japan, but wants to for cost and convience reasons host overseas.

Could you link to the thread you were referring to? There's a lot of good info back there that is still valid. Nothing has really changed in terms of Japanese domain names since they introduced the top level .jp domains.

.co.jp names don't only require a local address, but a certain verifiable level of incorporation in Japan. You can only get one .co.jp name per registered company.

I do not recall, nor did I see any reference to hosting regulations when I recently skimmed through the old regulations for .co.jp domains. I don't see what the purpose of requiring hosting in a certain country would be. I'm pretty sure you can host wherever you like.

You can host .co.jp and .jp wherever you want to.
To register .co.jp you need to be
incorporated with official registration in Japan.

You can find all the info at JPRS english page [jprs.jp]
And if you want avoid trouble then DO NOT REGISTER WITH ONAMAE.COM
