South Korea's government explores move from Windows to Linux desktop [zdnet.com]

The reason for this is simple. It's to reduce software licensing costs and the government's reliance on Windows. As Choi Jang-hyuk, the head of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, said, "We will resolve our dependency on a single company while reducing the budget by introducing an open-source operating system."

This could change the search landscape in Korea significantly given the stranglehold that Windows had on the country's internet up until now. Having the entire country on Windows allowed Korea to pioneer a lot of search and social networking years ahead of the rest of the world. It will be interesting to see if this change will trickle down to the rest of society.

Given MS's stranglehold it is no wonder. Growing and teething pains will ensue, of course, but moving away from SAS will certainly relieve the accounting side and increase national security!
