China's first search engine app tailored for adolescents unveiled [xinhuanet.com]

"Young," a mobile search engine application tailored for adolescents, was officially launched on Thursday by Chinaso Inc., a Chinese search engine company.

Based on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and supported by big data- and deep learning-based algorithms, the app can screen out and block harmful online content for adolescents, including violence, #*$!ography and gambling, according to Chinaso Inc.

Since the beta they claim to have 10 million downloads.

Weird that a teen would voluntarily put on a yoke. Cultural thing?

Based on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies

See, when I said that one need to put the letters AI to be in the trend... it certainly requires very complex neuronal computing system to detect #*$!, violence and gambling :)

supported by big data- and deep learning-based algorithms,

The argue to track users again more :)

The Chinese are protecting kids! (read that again) but for the rest of us who do ecommerce from time to time, that does not advance or help... so ... Note, but Ignore. Meanwhile, how many dollars to "adolescents" have to spend on the web? Do they spend anything on the web? Is the sky blue?

</dark humor>

<more serious>

Some things on the web are not actually intended to do WEB stuff (info, biz, entertainment, etc.) but are a response to cultural specifics by large bodies (political or commercial) and may have no actual benefit for the webmaster.

It's aimed at the parents not the kids. Chinese parents are, on average, highly protective. A SE that filters out 'unsafe' high risk inappropriate sites plus a timer to limit usage and other parental controls is a gimme for a sizeable market segment. How long it takes how many kids to bypass...

Yes, the term AI is marketing gobbledygook hype but it will be interesting to see how well their ML performs relative to western equivalents.

This can also protect kids from subversive westerner ideas and opinions :)
