Did anyone manage to figure out how exactly to promote their site in Baidu? it seems that there are some payments involved in order to appear on the front page...
Anyone has any tips?

Baidu has a PPC service. You can use that to promote your site. Their system is entirely in Chinese though. Some 3rd party companies offer an English interface to manage your campaigns.
