Baidu.com syntax question

Looking for "pages in index" and "links to" syntax.

Recently I had the opportunity to get more involved with Chinese Web promotion, and one thing that I have quickly realized is that Baidu.com plays a pivitol role within that country.

On a recent trip to Shanghai I was able to personally meet with a couple of representatives from Baidu, but they were not really very helpful (either due to lack of knowledge, lack of willingness to share, or because of some failure in the translation) in providing the syntax for finding out how many pages from a domain are included within their index for a particular domain, or how many incoming links there are for a particular domain.

I was hoping that somebody in here might have an idea of what this syntax might be. I of course tried all of the ususal suspects that work with the other major SE's, but without success. An engineer from baidu said that they would try to find out the answer for me, but I am not very optimistic about that actually happening. I would appreciate any input.

You want something like:

link:mydomain.com

which in Google would show you all the pages linked to that domain? I don't know that that would be on BaiDu...but I'll bet someone here does.

do a site:yourdomain.com will get you all the pages indexed in Baidu.

I don't think they have anything for links yet, I have contacted them several times, but never got a response.

Baidu is not even half as cool as google, the only reason it plays a big role in China is because they are government friendly. Google is too powerful for users to reach "illegal" results. All the major portals just don't want to risk themselves.

Google's operation in China is still not "authorized" by the government yet, maybe they want to impose a import tax.

I know Google has a dominant position in most of the major markets, but in China things are a little bit different. Baidu plays an important rule, even if they are not able to provide the "illegal" contents that maybe of interest to some Chinese people. Is there any similiar company in other countries, I mean, is there a "Japanese Baidu", or "Korean Baidu"?

Baidu is strictly chinese. I doubt they'll be any good in other languages.

Google is very powerful , but in Chinese SE world, sometimes google dosen't perform as well as baidu. Baidu is a se specalised in Chinese, that means baidu could get more relevant result on chinese words truncation...I can't explain it very in English, but the truncation of English is quite natural and easier than Chinese word.

An example, if you are search a person's name in Chinese, Google tend to return pages contain part of this name, but baidu is different, baidu test which one is more common in Chinese tradition before return results and then list the uncommon one behind the common one... I hope you understand what I mean...

and also, baidu is good at indexing active pages than google chinese, and is cache performs much more better than google...well, at least, the cached website could be open quickly, and google, on the other hand, no matter because of what..the cache is always dead.

Chinadu - I guess you misunderstood me. My question was:
Is there any other company in countires like Japan, Korea, Germany, UK etc. that has a similar position to Baidu in China?

I know about FAST/Alltheweb, but their Alexa rank is far below Baidu.

For long, I thought Baidu doesn't have a syntax like that, but... check out this page:

And on Baidu's forum, there are a lot of discussion on baidu's link attribute. Though it never worked for me, I assume this is what they intend to do. They are google user friendly.

which don't mention the link syntax, the function does not work for me either. I was wandering they didn't figure out it either, or in test? I don't have an idea.
Anyway, I often use Baidu when I am searching for chinese information. And I find i would get much more if I use both baidu and google. Maybe you can try it yourself too, and then you will find it really help sometime.

and google, on the other hand, no matter because of what..the cache is always dead.

The cache has been a problem after Google was banned in China for some 2 weeks (8/29 - 9/11) last year. So also Replacement of Google with Alternative Search Systems in China [cyber.law.harvard.edu] and

Thank you for the helpful responses! From what I heard, even though Google has better searching capability in China, Baidu is "preferred" by many people in China as the best search engine (perhaps for some of the reasons that as_is mentioned). I would like to hear more people's opinions about Baidu vs. Google.

Also, would somebody send me a sticky mail with the URL fot the Baidu discussion form. I would like to take a look at this.
