Google's China market share to grow in 2009 [reuters.com]

Google's China's market share will grow compared with other markets next year despite the downturn from the global financial crisis, the head of Google's China operations told Reuters on Friday.

Kai-Fu Lee, co-president of Google China, said China was the best performing market globally in the third quarter, but declined to forecast the growth rate for 2009.

Lee was optimistic that Google would continue to attract online advertising clients, despite the economic slowdown.

Google China enjoys a better reputation than that of Baidu and the fact is more and more advertisers want to put money into Google considering the high click fraud rate of Baidu. But Google really needs to work hard to increase its market share.

Increased advertisers for Google China would obviously be a good thing for them, but is the surfing public aware of these issues with Baidu? Do they care?

Are there any recent usage figures?

I thought Google was a fairly poor second.

Just came across an article that related to redstorm's comment.

Google Will Sweep Away Irregular Internet Advertising Agents In China [chinatechnews.com]

Google (GOOG) announced at its 2008 winter marketing forum in Beijing that it is preparing to launch an initiative to shutter all of the irregular digital advertising agents in China that resell Google's services.

With the rise of search engine advertising click fraud, the development of Google's keyword advertising business AdWords in China has been hurt. Liu Yun, vice president of Google, says that all of Google's advertising business is currently managed under a pay-per-click model in China. Therefore, any annual package or monthly package of advertising services are not allowed. Google has developed a detailed plan to eliminate irregular advertising agents across China who are selling to Chinese small businesses those services that do not match Google's model.

If Google is going to make efforts in this direction it will certainly give the advertisers a bit more peace of mind.

What is your impression of Google's chances in the China market now that Baidu has had a lot of criticism in the Chinese media? How is Google now perceived by the people in China that you know?
