This means Baidu will be doing more direct competition with Alibaba. They're going up against a long established player with this move. Do you think Baidu can be a challenger in this market?

Yep! Baidu has its advantages in technology and numerous users; But it's hard to bring actual challenge to Taobao of Alibaba in the next 2 years as far as i can c.
Anyway, Baidu has successfully replaced google's No. 1 position in China's SE market, i hope it can create another miracle!

This is a good competition in the coming time.

Baidu definitely is up to the level on challenges but Alibaba is going IPO which means they are going to have even more bullets now.

I think who can make themselves go global first will be the number one. Taobao is hot but still only within China. So I guess Baidu will have a good chance if they can use their existing resoruces to help users to launch their business worldwide.

Well, speak of globalization; Taobao of Alibaba has more advantages than baidu as Alibaba dot com itself is a world famous business community. What's more, Alibaba is has more commercial resource as it has wide connection with small and medium manufactures in China.
I do agree globalization is one of the most criterions to asset that will effect who will win finally!
