I'd read rumors about this earlier, but since even CNet has picked up on it I thought it deserved a post on WebmasterWorld ;)

article [rss.com.com]

Japanese cell phone giant NTT DoCoMo will become the first phone carrier to offer services based on Macromedia's Flash animation player

Japan is quite a haven for Flash developers and I think this could be a truly useful platform where this technology has a real edge over text in a lot of cases. I'm not a huge fan of Flash for websites, but the potential for the small screen seems enormous. I guess I'll have to hold off on upgrading my current phone until these babies come out.

As you say there is a big market for animations in mobile phones, the problem with all the mobile phone operators and producers have been standards, in the last few years we've seen more and more but still there is huge issues with this.
The mobiles will have to extend the memory to be able to provide more of these kind of "flashy" stuff, but that's also in the new product lines which is comming out from most mobile phone producers.
