Google, Korea Daum in talks on YouTube, ad deals - report [marketwatch.com]Google Inc. and South Korea's Daum Communications Corp. may share YouTube video content and cooperate in online advertising, the Korea Herald reported, citing unidentified industry sources.
Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt will meet with Daum's President Jong-Hoon Seok during his visit to Korea Tuesday to discuss details on mutual cooperation, the newspaper said.
Under a potential contract, Daum would be able to use all video content of Google's YouTube, while the U.S. company will use Daum as a channel for its online advertising, it said.
This appears to be a follow up from the earlier article we posted about Google Buying Its Way Into Korea [webmasterworld.com] back in February.

there has been a ton of new about google and daum getting into bed with eachother... here's the most recent one I noticed:
Both sides "plan to gradually expand their presence in the UCC (user created content) and search engine markets" in South Korea, it added.Google and Daum agreed last December to cooperate in the online advertisement market. Daum is running Google's cost-per-click search ads, one of the fastest-growing types of Internet advertising.

Its not really a surprise as daum has always been a been kinda...more "promiscuous" with outside third-party deals (namely foreign companies) from the start, so to speak. lol.
Recall that Daum was the first big portal to embrace the PPC business model with then Overture and used Google search results (for a heft revenue guarantee, mind you), but the portal leader in Korea, NHN, held out another 2 yrs before they took on a PPC. Basically seems to be a very.. "Anything to catch up with NHN." feel over there and the green machine (Daum). I get that feel from a few on the
inside as well.
That said, its no secret Google needs all the help it can get here and Google has been throwing out its arm with its starting pitcher for a while now, and now that they are finally pulling everything outta its bullpen... seems they finding a willing receiver. (or just finally forked out enough cash).
But overall, going in with one of the korea portal incumbents is certainly easier route to take then building Google Korea site as viable main destination site (its not).
NHN is still full of themselves no matter what the press says about "looking to be acquire/be acquired"....so that would just be a pain in the neck clash of egos, imo. So, Daum is perfect alternative. Its just a matter of pitching and who's receiving. Clearly, Google is leveraging its current poor standing with actual netizenry, with its deep deeeep pockets.
But it turn out to be a good marriage:
Daum uses G as step to catch NHN and maybe legimately to the world market. G gets its "local" channel to slip into the market without banging its head against the cultural wall, shouting into the wind with "better search tech", and moutning parking tickets for the Google Bus. lol
well done.
The only wrench I potential see (mabye sometime down the line): is what happens if another local Korea player comes in with rival tech and a few good underwriters (or from one of the big Korea conglomerates itching for a piece of the exploding online ad market here)? As we know.. Koreans love Korean things.
Still, they'd have a waayy to go to catch up..
G in Korea has been making its moves in earnest since end of last yr..this is the certainly another big step.
let's take a quick look at the big G in Korea push:
--Established research and development center
--Mobile search development deal with Telecom leader, SK.
--Finally get "real" distribution of its ads via Daum (daum gives Overture the boot! woahs continue to Yahoo Korea).
--Opens Gmail without invite and increased storage to Koreans.
--Succumbs to local govt./public pressure and agrees to restrict adult sites (need to have local national registration (or whatever) to access)
--Google Korea President and Head of IT is FINALLY named.
--The pre-nup is in! Daum and Google to tackle UCC! (User Created Content) focused on video and more...!
--Google is scowering universities for top talent recruiting (can you say "free rides on the bus!" lol)
yah, I'd say G is hungry for the Korea market and making their move.
Has this helped Google Korea..the site or the company branch? Well, everyone wants to work there (no surprise), and they are certainly establishing a strong moves in the "background".... but Google Korea site and search itself is still... well... most recent stats say Google Korea search has jumped to a massive 2% of the search market here (up from sub-1%)! WOOT! so, goes without saying, that end still has lots of room.
I haven't heard anything about specific direction under the guidance of the new Google Korea Pres... but its early yet.
Summary:
All Your Base Belong to Google...except Korea... YET!
Resistance is Futile! MYUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

to here...
``This is the first time that Google has revamped its search page specific to a certain group of users in its history,'' said Ted Cho who heads Google Korea's research center.animated google korea front page [webmasterworld.com]
its easy to see a progress of activity from that...but there actually tons of articles nowadays basically reiterating the same thing: Google is committed to Korea as a critical market, things are happenging and/or Google strengthens ties with Daum--watch out NAver and the rest of the world
usually this is accompanied, but other stuff about mobile industry here being so advanced that it is great market for Google to explore its new alliances with local telecom giants (namely SK) to develop next-gen mobile search. blah blah.
all I know is... yay! I get to finally dust off and wear my old "google is coming" hat and get shed the chickenlittle stamp on my forehead....
er.. I hope. *GK eyes goog Korea < 2% market share warily* lol =P
Naw, I got it on good authority.. GKorea isn't stopping now...not until the damn bursts and the little dutch boy is outta fingers. Now, whether that means on the front-end or more the backend or both still remains to be seen... but its looking more and more like in-through-the-backdoor play with gradual throwing out of more pretty bells and whistles up-front at that same time (the sensible move).
I'm just rooting for enough bells&whistles for the "west" to start taking notice...if only cause its fun to hear everyone analyze it to death. "Universal search is NOT inspired by Korean combined search" my left b-cheek!
But then again, I'm easily entertaine... BUNNY!
