Woz, I have been trying to draft a message about hosting location and effects on SERPS but finding it difficult without mentioning more details. I know we cannot mention url or name, I do not need to, but can I mention location and type of industry?

We recently had two new websites hosted in the USA instead of SE Asia and both are doing very better than local hosted ones.
Do I need to look more closely than I have at those websites or is it a 'given' that the hosting location is probably making the biggest difference.

Sounds like a good topic asiaseo. We have had a few threads on hosting location, particularly in relation to China. They are mentioned in the Golden Threads and might be a useful guide for you regarding content.

As you surmise, URLs & specific hosts are a no-no, and we would prefer if we stay away from metioning industry segments, but location would be quite OK, particularly as it seems to be one criteria used by regional search engines.

I would be quote interested to know how 'close' a server has to be to the user to get priority in G (or Y! or M$) serach results, eg same country, oe same 'region' by language or Net connectivity?

Yes i agree. Regarding hosting, since last five years we are hosting in US for better user experience as in 2002 when we tried to host in India specially in Mumbai (Bombay) it was horrible. Though it opened fast enough from with in India but for all international visitors it was horrible experience. Since than till today we are hosted in Central US and have well all round experience by visitors.

Now to question of SEO effect on it, initially there was few weigh on US only traffic but with in no time all major SEs identified the trend of visitors and we are doing good in Asia as well as in US. This is an aggregated view after five years over all data analysing of about 75 sites we monitor.

I have hosting in various places including the US and Mumbai. I see very good connectivity from me in the UK to the Mumbai server, so maybe you just need to change your hosting company!

Thanks for input. it was in 2002 as i mentioned. Things have changed since but we still prefer to host in US due to bandwidth it has. Have you checked what bandwidth you have at datacenter in Mumbai?

Also let me update you, we use different datacenter, we are the hosting company as we have multiple servers and we manage our own.

We're more than happy to have India specific topics here. I do keep an eye on the media and post when I find something interesting, but I'll have to admit that my market expertise lies a bit more to the East.
