Chinese government defeated by internet power [maltastar.com]

The Chinese government has admitted defeated in controlling the registration of Chinese internet users who previously had to register with their real names to be able to write a blog.

In a country where there is an estimated 20 million bloggers, the Chinese government had set-up strict measures for internet users to use blogs.

However many users found ways and means to bypass the registration, leaving the Chinese government no option but to back down from its plans to control the internet.

Is this true? Has real name registration become a mere suggestion now? Many would say that's a step in the right direction.

A long journey begins with the first step.

I guess it is very difficult to implement even through the govt wishes to do so. How about a Chinese outside China who registers a free blog using a proposed name? How this can be controlled?

The Chinese Government seems to be still working on the registration of users who wish to blog in China. According to this article [latimes.com], "Yahoo, Microsoft asked to censor Chinese blogs."

Under the accord with the Internet Society of China, an offshoot of the Information Industry Ministry, the companies are "encouraged" to register users under their real names ~ The companies may be forced to censor content or identify bloggers.

However,

Microsoft said it wouldn't ask users to reveal their identities.
Yahoo has yet to comment.

Interesting. (hat tip to Engine)
