Slowly but surely.

An article [demys.net] from Demys report that the Transitional Government of Afghanistan is making moves to redelegate the .af domain to the Ministry of Communications. Previously it was, and still is to a certain extent, controlled by an individual.

Internet usage in the country was severly restriced by past governments. With support from the United Nations Development Programme, this move is taken as an indication that Afghani internet usage is about to open up again as the country rebuilds itself.

It seems the UNDP has the task of restoring the local DNS service and and to "shift technical operations to a community-based management structure inclusive of multiple sectors within Afghanistan when feasible and appropriate."

Projections are low key at this point with a estimated 2000 .af domains expected to the registered by year's end. Actual usage will only start to increase as the telecommunications infrastructure is rebuilt.

This is a politically sensitive subject (HINT!) but I am sure all will agree it will be good for the country and global community as a whole.

Interesting find Woz. Now there's a domain you don't see too often. I did a Google search and could only find a couple of sites, but nothing seemed to be working. I agree that this will be a good step forward for the country.
