Google Inc., the world's biggest Internet search engine, said on Wednesday it is opening the Japanese-language version of its email service to anyone who wants to sign up.

Japan is the third market after Australia and New Zealand in which the U.S. Internet conglomerate has allowed open access to GMail, which it offers in more than 40 different languages.

Thanks for the heads up.

Google has been posting for lots of jobs in Japan, so they are really working on improving their presence here.

I set up the google mail service for one of my sites- works well in Japanese.
Only thing- haven't been able to figure out how to upload/import old mail from my server. If anyone has done it with gmail, let me know your secret!

Are you using Gmail for your domain? (i.e., David_M@example.jp) Is that available in Japanese as well? I thought they were just opening up the application process for regular Gmail accounts.

Yep, gmail for domains. me@mydomain.com
Management is in English, but you can switch the email interface to Japanese.

Keep in mind that you're limited to only 100 accounts with that program and the mailbox doesn't scale the way it does with regular GMail.
