Hiya all,

Just a few quick questions... Firstly, will Anzwers.com.au, NineMSN (and all the other important search engines) index my site even if it doesnt have a .com.au? In other words, how much does a country specific domain name (.au, .uk etc. etc) impact whether you get listed in a country-specific search engine?

Also: what is the best way to optimise for ninemsn and aol.com.au without sacrificing ones google optimisation?

Greetings jleane,

Welcome to Webmaster World.

While many SEs will accept and eventually crawl a wide variety of subject matter, many are country/topic specific.

I'd suggest going from Engine to Engine.

As soon as I get a few minutes, I'll post a couple of hundred for you to choose from.

Also: what is the best way to optimise for ninemsn and aol.com.au without sacrificing ones google optimisation?

Personally, I think if you optimise for Google, you've optimized for them all.

I should point out that none of these are my own, contain no smut, somewhat educationally oriented and are all freely available on the Internet. I merely did the legwork.

Also, I've removed the http:// so you'll have to do the copy and paste thing.

That's ok. You may reside in Australia, but your site is on the Internet.

About the only thing that will exclude you from submitting to any of those I've listed would be if they are country of origin specific (and some are), or if the content of the site is too far afield from your domain.

Also, I forgot to mention that the second grouping may only be sites having 'Site Search' capability. However, many of those do have provisions for submission.

In any case, that outta keep you busy for awhile. :)

Hi jleane, Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com].

The question really is "Where is your market?"

If your market is selling Widgets to Australians, then you predominantly need Top results in the Australian Engines along with good results in other engines.

However, if you are selling Widgets internationally, then you need Top results in as many Engines as you can regardless of location.

Most country specific engines give preference to local domains and/or sites with well defined local content, and this holds true for the Major Aussie Search Engines.

For example, if you search on Anzwers.com.au (supplied bu Google) or Altavista.com.au (supplied by AltaVista) for Widgets (really!) you will find Australian domains feature almost exclusevly in the top positions.

NineMSN on the other hand, returns results from Looksmart first, then Inktomi.
So, again searching for Widgets, firstly there are 45 results from the Looksmart database that come from all over the world. When you get past these, you then get to the Inktomi results which again favour Australian Domains. The same happens with Optusnet.com.au. If you need *top* positions in either of these then you need to be looking at a Looksmart listing, although I suggest you read up here on Looksmart in general before making a final decision.

NineMSN and OptusNet are important in Australia simply because so many people who install the CD they recieve from Telstra or Optus end up with these sites as their home page and rarely search anywhere else. I have clients and friends who, until I educated them, did not realise they could search anywhere else let alone know that there was such a thing as a Google!?

So, if you are targeting Australia, you need Top positions in these Engines, therefor you need an Australian Domain. If you are targeting the International market, you would be better off with a .com domain, which is far easier to obtain in any case.

I mention in this message about "Selling Widgets", however even if you have a non-commercial site who's readership in mainly Australian, then the above would still apply.

Some past threads to read:-
Looksmart Australia, how effective is it? [webmasterworld.com]
Which is the most popular Search Engine in Australia? [webmasterworld.com]
Australian Top 10 SEs [webmasterworld.com]

Hope this helps

Woz, that's scary what you said about the free CDs from the ISPs making nineMSN the search page. I'm a Google user (aren't we all?) and whenever I cross-check a Google search with nineMSN the results from the latter are nowhere near as relevant.

No wonder so many of my friends and relatives complain how hard it is to find stuff on the internet - they're using nineMSN! ;)

>that's scary

Yeah I know. Sometimes we forget how real people use the net. By comparison we know what we want and where to find it fast simply because this is our business. But to the great unwashed ....

Sometimes it is worthwhile spending a little time with offline friends and walk in their shoes a litte as they use the net. Very educating.

The odd one out is AOL, supplied by Google of course, as they have their search set to World Wide by default. If you want Australia only you have to select it and then get the same results as Anzwers. So if you are marketing to Australia with a .com, at least you have a change with AOL Australia if you can get good rankings in Google.

>Im selling doodads

I'm sorry, Widgets only here. Any discussion of aforementioned doodads must take place in private and will involve vast sums of money changing hands.

;) ;) ;)

Seriously, glad to help jleane.
