According to an article [idgnet.co.nz] from IDG NZ, "New second level domain name leaps first hurdle".

The new 2LD, maori.nz, aimed at the the Maori speaking population "hopes to rectify what it sees as an imbalance between New Zealand's two official languages."

According to the article, 46% of the Native Maori population has internet access vs 65% for NZ's European population. The new 2LD "required at least 70% approval from more than 200 votes. In the end over 1600 votes were recorded."

This will be interesting to watch as I believe this may be the first Country Level domain aimed at a specific language within that country.

Everyone of those maori speakers understands English. We already have iwi.nz for Maori interest groups. (An iwi is sort of a tribe).

Update:
The criteria to be in iwi.nz is very strict!

New 2LD...fine.

As for the justification: "hopes to rectify what it sees as an imbalance between New Zealand's two official languages"

Laughable, government sponsored nonsense.
