Don't know how long this has been going on but Web Wombat (www.webwombat.com.au) is now offering paid submission in which a site is guaranteed to be spidered within 48 hours. You can however still submit for free for .au and .nz sites. The main difference is that for paid submissions .com sites will be accepted providing they have Australian content.
The fee isn't that bad but do any Aussies think it is worth it? Can anyone justify that they are getting enough referrals from Web Wombat?
You are right in that is a very reasonable fee, (about US$25 for up to 150 pages) but as you say it is dependant on the number of referrals you would get. I have no sites listed with them as I don't have any .au's so I can't offer any further information unfortunately.
Does anyone else have any experience?

I also believe the fee is very reasonable and it may be good value for some sites.
However, based on the number of referrals I get from Web Wombat there is no way that I could justify paying for indexing.
In a related post a few months ago the amount of referrals I received was less than 0.1%
There has been no improvement in the number of referrals to my site so IMHO it may be a waste of money.
Have to agree, I've seen my webwombat referrals decline over the last 4-6 months. Still ranking on searches, so an algo. rejig is unlikely, but traffic down by 40% at least.
Maybe all those aol-au coffee coasters have paid off and they've bitten into other local se's visitation?
I hesitate to mention who's left in case I jinx them and they go too! But at least they are still feeding good results to our sites, usually in the top 10 referrers.
Cheers
