When did Systrans (as used by Altavista) start supporting Japanese? Is this news?

Maybe the Systran software got better? I found their Japanese translation extremely poor, and haven't used it since...but none of them are really any good. If you know some Japanese you get a lot more mileage out of the dictionary programs online.
