Hi All,

Now that our American client has a taste of the Spanish Speaking and Chinese speaking markets, they want to go into the Indian market. Does anyone know of a place that has info on this?

Do we need an .IN domain name?

What are the popular Indian Search Engines?

Do we need to translate the site from English into another language like Hindi for a B2B site selling primarily to engineers and architects?

Any special challenges to promoting a site in India?

Any help would be appreciated.

"What are the popular Indian Search Engines?"

Google

"Do we need an .IN domain name? "

Not necessarily. In fact an American/European flavor will work better. Dot com is still best.

"Do we need to translate the site from English into another language like Hindi for a B2B site selling primarily to engineers and architects? "

You may be surprised but most Engineers and architects will find it very difficult to work with a ' Hindi' site. The teaching medium is mostly English you see.

"Any special challenges to promoting a site in India?"

Not really, if your language is English. You may try to link with a popular portal like indiatimes/sify/rediff etc for immediate traffic. It is expensive though. Last I checked , a small link on the main home page of indiatimes, cost apx. USD 2000 for a week.

There are many regional portals and news sites/papers etc that will be cheaper but have limited regional reach. As you may know there are more than I guess 25 popular languages? in use. Forget about the dialects. So stick to English, which every reasonably educated person speaks.

"Any help would be appreciated."

You are welcome. All comments are general in nature. Explore away. I am sure others will respond differently because in India we have many different views on one subject ;-)

Thanks Green Grass. Redstorm...I just meant that we translated the site into Spanish and had great success from an SEO perspective. We have also gotten a lot of leads from China and are now in the process of converting the site into Chinese. Based on this success, they now want to tap into the Indian market.

I agree with Green grass. Making a vernacular language based site is not going to help , keep it english. Plus if you face issues in developing links try to get sites that have good PR and indian content even that helps in SEO.

Advertising on general portals wont help for b2b sales. Adwords will be better or trade shows. Internet usage for finding information is very low
