What is the difference between .com.cn and .cn domain? Are they having perferential appearance on search results, assuming we are talking about baidu/google? If yes, which one is preferred?

P.S. Just performed a search while composing this post, most google China results showed .com.cn and only a few .cn is up. Is it meaning that com.cn is more perferred or just because .com.cn is more common?

com.cn is a lot older than the top level .cn name so it has had a big head start. The top level .cn names have only been available for 3 years now.

When the .cn ccTLD became available they revamped the entire domain registration process in China. A lot of Chinese companies were finding it too difficult to get the .cn names and had instead gone with the easier-to-register and cheaper .com names. This is why I still see a lot of Chinese companies with .com domains in the Baidu and Google SERPs.

Algorithmically I don't see any noticeable weight being applied to .com.cn over .cn or vice versa. Is anyone else seeing any differences?

I think most of those popular Chinese sites have both .com and .com.cn or even .cn domains...However most of people still using the .com domains..

For me, the personal reason is that it is easier to type...
For example.
baidu.com = baidu.com.cn
sina.com = sina.com.cn.

When I type baidu.com, I think, OK, enough, let's press "enter" now. I never want to type 3 extra characters, ".cn".

Shorter is the only reason for me to use .com domain in China.
