Problem accessing European Website from China

Can anyone give me advice in administrating a European Website from China? I'm running a cgi-based dynamic content website which is situated at a European ISP (designed for European public).

I have to go to China for a longer period of time, so I need to make sure that I can get fast access to my website whenever necessary (basically every day for content management, user administration etc.) During a
previous, shorter stay in China last year, I used to go to Internet cafes.

While working with this kind of connection, there were difficulties opening the website. It often happened
that when I tried to navigate to my site using Firefox, I was getting the "document contains no data" error
instantly. It seemed that the browser didn't even try to load the site. The same thing happened with Internet
Explorer, I received the "page cannot be displayed" error message immediately after trying to access the
page. Sometimes the whole website didn't work for a really long time, sometimes only parts of it didn't work and sometimes there were no problems at all.

I would like to know what's the cause of this bizarre problem and how I can solve it.

I had the impression that it was slightly better when staying in a bigger town. I also had the impression that it was better when using a computer workstation which didn't share the Internet connection with other computers.

1. Is Internet speed the solution? Does it work better if I rent an appartment and have the fastest high-speed
Internet installed there?

2. Or is there anything I can change at the browser settings/ Internet settings of my computer to improve
the situation? Which settings?

3. Does it help if I ask my Service provider in Europe to adjust the server settings of my website? Which
settings could be affected?

4. Or is there any other solution I didn't think of so far?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld jinyu.

This doesn't sound like anything you can fix by tweaking your software or hardware. It's a connectivity issue. You may have to resolve yourself that your connection will not be as reliable. Getting a dedicated connection setup may be the best option.

Another option you didn't mention would be to set up a remote access of some sort. You could use SSH tunneling and run a remote VNC. There are also services and software that will allow you remote access to your desktop in Europe like GoToMyPC or PC Anywhere.
