Could someone from overseas do this?

In an earlier thread I have been discussing obtaining a DID or virtual number for Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan that can then go via SIP to Australia.

Since I last posted in this thread we have been doing some further research and have contacted several companies in Japan that provide VoIP services. None of them seem to even understand this concept of virtual number.

Given this I was thinking may be the Japanese VoIP system is much more advanced than that elsewhere such that PSTN services can call VoIP numbers directly. If there are millions of these VoIP services and YahooBB has so many then this could make sense.

YahooBB VoIP customers get a 050 number which can be called from a normal phone. From what I have read there was once a restriction on receiving international calls at these numbers, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Ahhh, now we are getting somewhere.

From what I gather this is a standard SIP service, do you know if this is correct?

My thought is to have a friend in Japan set up an additional number (I would assume this is possible) and then land the SIP on an IP phone here.

I suppose there could be issues with this, such as restrictions in the contract or only certain IP addresses are allowed (ie only YahooBB addresses).

Thanks for the info on this! Bill.

I've read that the YahooBB phone uses the MGCP protocol instead of SIP.
