Setting permissions on htaccess

Hi all

I'm not sure if this is even a valid question, but I'm trying to make a password system work and I'm wondering if the .htaccess file needs permissions set to, say, 777.

I'm using CuteFTP and I can't see the htaccess file on the server, and as I normally set permissions with a right-click on the file and choosing CHMOD, I can't see how to do it. (Or even know if I need to)

Someone put me out of my ignorance. :)

First, you don't need to set any permissions on the .htaccess file. And, if you really have to for some reason (read/write function in a script) you can write a quick script that will chmod the file for you.

Now, the reason you can't see the file in your FTP program depends on the server settings. Some providers block all .h* files from being seen in the folder tree (for security reasons). That doesn't mean the file isn't there, you just can't see it.

Crome, some FTP programs have a setting for "show hidden files" or similar. You might check that out, too.

The file isn't "hidden"...
Information about the file is never sent to the FTP program in the first place. This is handled on the server side and has nothing to do with showing hidden files.
The FTP program doesn't know whether the file exists or not.

I use CuteFtp and have no problems seeing my .htaccess file so there must be something else going on?

My ftp software has a "parameter" setting option of "-a"
to view all files.

Using the CuteFTP Site Manager>Edit>General Tab>Check the "Enable Filter" box. Click on the Filter button beside it, on the Options tab, check "Enable remote filters" and add "-a" to the "Remote filter:" field.
