For a good number of the sites I manage, the referrals are non existant...despite spidering and rankings, I think my targetted niche could be way off for the potential users of WiseNut.

What about the rest of the group?

Anybody getting Wise nutty with it?

I have one US site that's currently doing 2000-2500 uniques per day. I average about 3 referrals per day from WN.

Hey Jeremy,

Across all the sites that I manage, I can't remember the last time I saw a refferal from WiseNut. Perhaps the sites don't fit into the interests of WiseNut users, like you mentioned, but who does use WiseNut?

All of our sites cover a rather broad spectrum of interests (from retail to manufacturing to professional services), so I guess that begs the question, who is the typical WiseNut user?

Anyone...?

<added> 80% of the sites rank very well in WiseNut </added>

They could be going up in a big way if MSN gets its hands on L$.

I tried a few searches the other day...the response time of their engine really turns me away. Other than that, I must say it's not a bad engine.

I just wanted to know if the thing was known at all outside all us 'webmasters'.

Looks like the consensus is a definite no, at this point. Too bad. Seems that they've built something, question is, can they make people use it?

And for people that are addicted to the quick response time of Google, can LookSmart make WiseNut Fast enough for people to search there. To me, that's their biggest hurdle.

Also - I don't recall seeing *any marketing at all* coming from their direction. If MSN switches to it, sure -> that'd give them coverage & interest.

But if that doesn't happen -> then what? Why did LS buy it, if they ain't gonna market the thing?

Decided to look at how I list with them and, on the third search, I got:

> Due to an overwhelming response, we are experiencing temporary server overloads.

So I suppose that someone out there was using them at the same time as I was!

Due to poor spidering, only one of my 2 sites is in Wisenut. :( Even though that other site has quite good inbound links, including the ODP. The one site that is in Wisenut gets quite good SERPs for the 2 most important single word search terms, #2 and #3 respectively. These get many hits a day from Google. As for Wisenut, hits from them are so rare they aren't worth mentioning. For anyone curious, the demographics of my site users skew to teenagers and young adults. However, Wisenut doesn't seem to be marketing themselves to any group. At the moment, to me Wisenut has very much a "beta" feel to the whole thing. IOW, not yet ready for prime time. Thus, at the moment Wisenut is irrelevant.

The question is what future Wisenut may hold? Looksmart buying them does seem to suggest they intend to develop it beyond beta. IMO, Looksmart needs to do some serious work on Wisenut. Then they need a major portal to use them. msn.com seems quite possible, if Wisenut ever gets good.

With their lack of a proper porn filter, I can't believe it's out of beta.

It's good to know that when I want to show someone results I was getting a year ago, there's still a place to send them.

I just tried a search for a site that was taken down mid-last year. It still ranks well, but the domain's been bought by a casino site that has no content reflecting the original site.

Maybe monitoring WiseNut for 404s is a good way to find expired high ranking domains, but I wonder if there's enough WiseNut traffic to make it worthwhile.
