Is it something personal?

Hello everyone!

I been trying to submit to excite and lycos and they don't seem to be interested at all. I used the Looksmart Partners pay option due to ignorance. This was 2 months ago and still i am not listed. I've tried the text link at the bottom of the add_url screen on excite to get a free indexing of the site, this just sends me back to the Pay scheme which is rubbish. Every page of my site is linked from the homepage but still they don't seem interested.

Any suggestions, on how to expedite matters?

Hi Caine
Im my opinion Excite is one of the most painful sites to deal with. My first attempt to submit to the free service took over four months to show up in searches. Then my site was dropped for no apparent reason. Now it looks like the free option has gone and you must pay a fee.
I went directly to looksmart and took their 8 week option. I think i should up after 8 weeks maybe 7 so i have no complaints with them.

Absolutely... These search engines are known for very individual attention to users and webmasters, and Excite was waiting for you ;).

Actually, keep in mind that until its update earlier this year, Excite had not updated since last May, and everybody had pretty much written them off. I certainly wouldn't be wasting my energy worrying about when they're going to update again.

As for Lycos, the best way to submit to them is via Fast (alltheweb.com), and they're pretty rapid... at least they are if you have a listing in ODP. I'm not sure otherwise. There are several threads on the boards about submitting, with some consensus (I don't want to speak for everyone, though) that you need to get some links and an ODP listing before you can expect the engines to index you.

HotBot (Inktomi) and AltaVista are currently the engines that really seem dead... Inktomi for sure has a submission penalty. Some conjecture that AV does too... You definitely need some incoming links before you submit. Maybe submit your links first... then submit your pages a month or so later.

Well, I don't know if this is worth it or not but I submitted to the engines and I'm listed in Excite (FOR FREE)

Now I don't know if Excite is using another DB to pull it's resources from or not but I am listed in Excite and it didn't that long.

I simply looked up my domain in Excite and presto!

Now how am I ranked? I dunno yet. Can anyone help me find out what keywords are being used to get to my site? I don't see an ything in my traffic reports :(

Caine-

Robert_Charlton has already given you some excellent advice about how to get listed on these engines. Try reading through some of the other threads here, including the ones regarding directhit. That can also help with Lycos. Let us know when your situation changes. We always like to hear of new success in the field.

Congrats on your listing in Excite. It's getting harder and harder to get listed for free these days.

To check on what you are ranked for, look at your page. Think to yourself, "What is this page about?" You might consider things like keyword density, and the linkage of other sites and directories towards the page in question.

There is also position checking software, but that is really unnecessary. All you need to do is sit down next to your web page and get familiar with it's contents. Try keyword combos that you targeted, and if you don't have a high link popularity, you might have to dig deep. Real deep.

Well, IS excite pulling it's resources out of another DB or is it using it's own?

If it is using it's own, then great! My free submittor is working. I may have the key to the backdoor of excite!

But can anyone clarify if Excite is using another DB off another engine?
