And yet another new engine! Wizi Search, I'm wondering if this is anything to do with Jini Search.

Maybe the names are similar lol

All I could find on Jini search was that the domain was registered.

I've also found another 4 new engines on top of the above mentioned.

Search Engine wars eh!

This appears to be a pure ODP mirror; but there are broken images on the site, so it may have been abandoned (it has been around a while).

Can you let me have the others that you have found by sticky please so that I can add them to the list?

Jini Search
Now there's a blast from the past. :) The .ie version of their domain was deleted recently. It never really got started though. The competition was too intense. ;)

Ah. Makes you wonder why they couldn't get started though!

Hosting is not that expensive. Theoretically, as long as you can cover the hosting and get in search engines, a site can last forever.

Strange. Maybe I'm thinking more about running a directory than a Search Engine, still, I can't see why they couldn't have given it a shot.

Perhaps it was a technology issue - you know, trying to keep up with the rest.

Jinisearch.co.uk, jsearch.co.uk and TheArndale.com are all gone now.

T4biz.co.uk still appears to be live.

This may be a good time to point to this forum's Charter [webmasterworld.com] to read the criteria for what type of search engines we want to dicsuss.

Here's an important excerpt:

The reason an engine must meet some of these criteria
is that in this day & age, it takes a halfway competent programmer
a weekend to slap together another open source script to index
about 5-10 million urls.

We aren't here to discuss every engine on the planet, just those
that will get enough market share to become great one day, or to
become used by enough people to be worth actively promoting one's
own position within their database.

Thanks in advance for understanding and following the guidelines.

Running a search engine is somewhat different to running a directory. For a start there is the competition to worry about. Then there is the site acquisition problem. Then there is the advertising. Jini was big into advertising but not so competent on the search angle from what I remember though it was making some big claims about the UK market.

It doesn't take too much traffic in the UK and Ireland to make a search engine or directory worth submitting to. At their peaks, The Arndale and T4Biz both carried reasonable amounts of traffic (nearly all from popunders).

This discussion may have been better in the UK & Ireland Forum really.

Talking about T4Biz. I got a call from them a while back now, wanting to do a big partnership thing.

Anyway, after talking for an hour, it seemed to be based on inserting a code into web page, which I guess displays banner/s, and then hits are exchanged through a network using retail stores, who then pay the websites a commission.

I declined his offer, as I only enquired! I'm trying to think who's behind the exchange thing er.....

This outside company that owns the exchange system are pretty big though..

Shall we continue this on UK & IRELAND?
