The Alternative Search Engines Forum Charter [webmasterworld.com] has been updated to narrow the focus of the forum a bit.

Last I checked, in the Yahoo "search engine" category there were over a hundred listings - and this was a while ago. The goal here, is to discuss 'the best of the rest' - not just the rest.

If you are a fan of new & upcoming search engine technology, then stick around, because every major engine that isn't Google or Yahoo ;) has been mentioned here a time or two - and we've got representatives from most of these that read, post, and offer information on their companies on a regular basis.

Thanks for the clarification. There are many weekend project/hobby sites out there with a Yahoo listing that don't really qualify for a "serious" alternative search engine discussion.

I have to say that the mooter thing took me by surprise and I'm quite impressed by the search adventurers out there.

This is a forum to watch!

The charter is really nice. It makes everything very clear and it's informative too, giving a bit of insight on what goes into the development of quality engines as well.

I'd love to see Northern Light re-launch; I used to really enjoy using it for researching some topics. I still think of it as one of the all-time classics.

Hmmm.... "when Vivisimo launched it was the only engine with on-the-fly clustering". If my memory serves me correctly, Inference Find was the first, followed by Query Server. The former is now unfortunately defunct, and the latter launched in late 1998, nearly two years before Vivisimo.

Corrected - thanks for the history lesson!
