Acrobat has problem with characters

Maybe this is the wrong place to post this, but it's kind of an accessibility issue (at a stretch):

I downloaded a .pdf written mostly in English. However, there might be some Chinese characters in it, because when I get a certain distance down the length of the document, it goes blank and I get a message saying that a character set "ODCTTA+SimSun", cannot be read.

It may be that the character set in question is not loaded on my PC, as opposed to anything being wrong with my Adobe Reader 6.0 installation.

Can anyone suggest where I should start looking?

First move would be to check whether you have the language files for East Asian languages installed in Windows - go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages and choose the appropriate languages.

You should also download the Asian font packs for Acrobat Reader, which are available here:

[adobe.com...]

There are several places you can download the SimSun font specifically too, try a search.

The kind of error you are getting occurs when the publisher hasn't embedded the fonts in the PDF and you don't have them on your machine.
