Alt tags on place holder images

My company has a fairly large product database all of these products have a pages as you would expect but not all of the pages have pictures of the products, which is somewhat annoying, so we created an "Awaitng Image" picture now because this picture is linked with the product it has an alt tag (the product code for example)

i have since been asked by my manager to remove the product(place holder)images. which got me to think are there any advantages or disadvantages to just leaving the place holder images with product code alt tag on?

Not really. Unless you start stuffing the alt attributes. Which I'm sure you wouldn't do. :)

Whenever you have an image that has "zero" meaning, a blank alt attribute is in order...

What P1R said. I use blank atl attributes. I used to use "shim" for my shims, but someone once played me a JAWS page that reminded me of Mary Poppins, so now I do blank.
