I have a friend who wants to help me find more clients (for certain fee of course). She is very enthusiastic and somewhat computer literate. I'm looking to buy her a book about webdesign in general, navigation, colour selection, different resolution, browsers etc. I don't need her to learn HTML or PhotoShop, just some basic stuff so she could answer client questions and explain why we are better than others :)

Web Desing in a Nutshell - 2nd ed - Jennifer Niederst - O'Rielly. ISBN 0-596-00196-7

Excellant book for a very strong basic coverage of all there is to be concerned with when thinking off getting into site building, especially at a commercial level. The exact book by the sounds of what you wish to do.

Check out their site also - pretty much has everything one needs to be getting on with it, regardless of present standards.

Also check out, Wiley publishers - they do the Bible range of Web and programming books. Another is Sybex - which do very good intro level programming books.

I found "web by design" by Molly Holzshlag to be of good basic information. Sybex - ISBN 0-7821-2201-9
