Cash method is obviously simpler, but I guess using accrual method makes more sense when dealing with invoices, taking 50% upfront, etc. So what method do most web design shops use?

For my business, I always used the cash method - much easier to keep track of, as I didn't ever want to spend that much time on the book keeping aspect of it (though, it was always a very small, one person consultancy with at most, one contractor...)
Bigger shops, I would imagine, would take advantage of the accural method as it makes the records a bit easier to look at a glance & see how things stand, as far as margins, expenses, etc.
