What's the going UK rate for web redesign?

I'm hoping to avoid a painful trial & error learning process...

We're looking for a professional web designer to help with the redesign of our website.

The project deliverables include page mock-ups, a new navigation scheme emphasizing usability and simplicity, and production versions of any graphics. The work does NOT include search engine optimisation work. We would implement the HTML and other code changes in-house. Our site is a UK e-commerce shop, with ~20 informational/catgeory pages (including home page), a shopping cart & checkout, and ~200 standardised product detail pages (i.e. single template dynamic HTML).

So far we've had one quote of £550 + VAT.

Is that more/less than what others have paid? Do you have any tips on what to look for in a competent web design shop? Any suggestions for contract terms re quality assurance?

Any insight is very much appreciated!

Howdy... I just quoted something very similar here in North America over the weekend. That price seems about right - can you private message me about it, I can help you out even more.
