Thursday a Danish court fined a Danish company $2,200 for sending 156 unsolicited emails.

In the first such case in this Scandinavian country, the Maritime and Commercial Court in Copenhagen fined Fonn Danmark $2,200 under the country's ban on unsolicited advertising e-mail and faxes.

Remember last year, the danish courts convicted some poor sod [webmasterworld.com] for linking to other websites!.

Hmmmm... maybe Denmark is not a great place for web developers ;)

No joke tigger. The Consumer Agency sued the spammer after having received 50 complaints.

The consumer ombudsman stated:

"We would have like to see a bigger fine, but considering that we are talking about a very small company and the fact that it has only been found guilty of sending 156 advertisements, the fine isn't that bad,"

What an outstanding waste of time and money! - No wonder the taxes are so damn high here...

Its a shame all the proper spammers have servers in the Cayman Islands, Bolivia and Russia, bank accounts in Switzerland and live in a Gulfstream private jet....

They're going after the little guys because they know they'll never get the real spammers...

Then wait until the EU's new UCE (SPAM) will start i think it's the 1st of September, then we will see more people suing companies like this.

I find this disgusting, and unfortunatly, sadly typical here in DK. There are so many things in Denmark that need time and attention and resources. This is not one of them.

But most spam email originates from the US, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Brazil and Argentina... I don't think EU powers reach that far.

I suspect not. This reeks of a 'we need to justify our jobs' type thing to me...

That poor company probably sent emails to targeted, hand-picked prospects in the hope of gaining a little extra boost to sales.

God forbid anyone should want to make any money!

Atcually I don't agree with you here Nick. I think this ruling could become precedence and might scare others from doing it, though I agree with points made above that the spam that reach us here often originates from countries where the legislation can't reach.

Personally I think it's a good move by the Danish ombudsman and Virginia could be heading the same way:

Virginia's new law makes spamming a felony punishable by one to five years in prison.
