What if:
1) I subcontracted out the initial web design to any of a number of firms of my choosing. As part of the contract, these companies/individuals would not place any kind of link or ad on the designed site that leads back to themselves. In other words, all business referrals (based on the quality of the site) would come back to me.
2) I would do several things for the client:
- select reliable and inexpensive hosting
- select quality web design services
- select and provide advanced visitor tracking services
- select vendors for and/or custom-design any special site features
- investigate any service outages
- continually look for cheaper and/or more reliable hosting
- provide advice on what to do to improve the promotional effects of the site, improve conversion rates, email marketing, etc.
Do you think this would work, or do you see any holes in it?
You would be functioning as a sort of "general contractor". Like in the real world, when you build a house, the GC may know how to do all the things necessary to build a house, he/she would most likely subcontract and supervise.
But, I also agree that most developers already do this at some level. You would need to define exactly what the advantage is in using you.
Simplifying the entire process comes to mind.
