I simply refuse to be called a web designer any more - there are just so many millions of people with frontpage who call themselves WD's that its driving me nuts - i spoke to one guy the other day who claimed to be - upon question of his skills - he didnt even know frontpage - and was building websites in Word...

What is your job title...?

Well being so diversed, I can understand the loathing for a complete all encompassing title. My boss called me something once whenever he was introducing me to someone new and I really liked it. He called me the:

Swiss Army Knife

And that is exactly what we are. Many different skills for many different jobs. Maybe modify it a little like,

Internet Army Knife

I want to see if i can officially change my title to: Internet Marketing Consultant

I like the sound of that better than SEO Specialist

Yesterday durring the monday morning meeting I was called a "sponge". I got this because I can absorb so much info. I am not much a fan of that

I go by "internet marketer", who also happens to be in charge of "search-friendly" design for a corporate website.

So my question for Googleguy is this: Does this title make me "evil"?

Woohoo - post 100!

Lucky;) But really, my title is "Internet Marketing Specialist". But I never actaully use it. If someone asks me "What do you do?" This is what follows 9 times out of 10...

"What do you do?"asks Curious George.
"I promote web sites on the internet " I say.
"Oh..ahhh..."sais Curious George.
"You don't want to know"I say shaking my head as I walk away.

Occasionly I'll get a web savvy person who asks and then it goes like this...

"What do you do?"asks Curious web savvy George.
"I promote web sites on the internet" I say.
"Oh. So you write meta tags and such?"asks Curious notaswebsavvyashethinksheis George.
"No, there's actually much more to it now....aahh...yea. I write meta tags," I say walking away shaking my head.

I generally prefer Web Developer, as I'm on my own, doing the design, graphics, HTML/CSS, accessibility, managability, usability, scripting, etc.

If I'm in a pretentious mood, Information Architect is also quite a good term.

I prefer to be called The Godfather of the web.

If you have a problem, that requires some a disciplining, I will take care of it for a small fee.

Me and my boys, will take care of any problem.

You don't have to understand, and I won't explain, just open your checkbook, and just sign it. I'll let you know how much I deserve.

GAAAAAAG!

Oh .. pul-leease excell ... "if anyone can do it where do all the ugly web sites come from?" ;-)

Me ... webmaster ... 'cause I'm still trying to master it after six years of designing/revamping/updating sites, look and feel, content, architecture, META, SE & directory submissions and update notifications, lurking, ranting, tearing hair out, sighing and ... on the odd occassion I get it right, allowing myself a smug self-satisfied smirk and rave to my other half so he can provide mucho kudos for me to preen and recover sufficiently to continue doing this stuff ... DANG ... I'm hooked, aren't I?

What do I call myself, or what do I call others? All of you, of course, are "OPPORTUNISTS". Me? I'm an "ENTREPRENEUR". ;-)

(Reminds me of a semi-relevant joke: What's the difference between a developer and a conservationist? The conservationist has ALREADY built his house in the forest!)

Interesting thread, folks.

The Title is just part of the package. I've yet to make up business cards.

I think it's importnat to have a title that the majority of the population will understand.

While I like the ring of 'Website Architect', people may get confushed and expect blueprints to be involved. ;)

Of course, if your scope of activity is highly focused then it makes sense to dial in on that focus.

My company does all web stuff but slants towards generating income and results for people.

I rarely refer to myself as Founder & CEO, and use Sr. Project Manager more often.

I think 'Website Designer' is the best all around title even AOLers will understand. ;)

If I'm feeling high brow- "Internet Corporate Relations Consultant" can work. That is- in the broad sense what web designers/programmers/SEO's, and all the other titles do.

Just my opinion.

Man, you all have made my morning sparkle!

Rather than call myself anything, I turn it around and use my motto, which is "Helping YOU on the Internet".

Trouble is, no one ever types it into a search engine!

...if they did, they would find me - first.

Person: what do you do?
Me: I help people on the internet.
Person: oh.
Me: (trying not to be to pushy) Do you have a computer? Person: ya, but it's broken

It's amazing how many broken computers are around...

Actually, I find "Consultant" covers most of the ground.
