hello all,

Does anyone know of any third party software, or a setup in outlook itself, that will spit out a big pop up window when outlook receives a new message? I have an idiot manager too lazy to check his mail, so I have to find some sort of setting or program what will loudly and visibly announce that he has a new message.

Thanks in advanced.

(BTW, i do not use outlook myself)

Weblamer - Outlook will do that automatically - just make sure under Tool>Options>Mail Delivery it is set to check for messages every X minutes. It will sound an alert when messages arrive.

You can also go to Tool>Options>Preferences>E-Mail Options and tell it to put up an alert message when new messages arrive.

Those directions are for Outlook 2000 - I presume other recent versions are similar.

<added>Do note that step one will only provide an audible alert; Step 2 will provide a visual pop-up; neither will matter if A) Outlook is not set to check for mail or B) your boss does not bother to open Outlook.</added>

<more added>Under Tool>Options>Preferences>E-Mail Options>Advanced Options "Sound an Alert" must be checked to get he audible alert - but that should be on by default.</more added>

Hmm.. the version he has simply makes a sound when a new mail comes.. but there is no visual alert that there is a new mail message...

ive been looking at 3rd party add ons but i loath to sit and try out a dozen or so of them

Are you saying there is no option in his version for a visual pop-up? There should be no need for an add-on.

I can confirm that visual popups are also built into Outlook. Do a search for:

display a notification when new message arrives
on Google. Go to the second link, they show visual examples for Outlook 97 and 98. Outlook 2000 can follow the Outlook 98 example.

Nope. Under tools/options/general under send/receive messages, there is a checkbox for playing sounds, but nothing that would indicate a visual alert.

Ah, you said Outlook - Outlook Express is a completely different program. Don't know if that is possible in OE.

Weblamer, a disctinction needs to be made between Outlook and Outlook Express. Although both are from Microsoft, they do not function the same. There is no popup notification feature on Outlook Express. It has limited functionality.

I don't know of any freeware tools that have popup notifiers, but you can check Slipstick.com under Utilities > Productivity > Notification

Do a search for "outlook express" and you should see one shareware program for Outlook Express.

Oops. My bad. I should have known this, too.

Thanks for the help, though.

Sure, not a problem. I knew it was Outlook Express once you said Tools > Options > General :)

For only £75 an hour I will stand by his desk and slap him with a dead haddock every time he gets a mail. ;)

You can always change the sound to my personal favourite [user.mc.net] (.wav, 25kb)

haha, for 75 an hour, i'll slap him in the head.

Hmm, i would do it for free come to think of it.

Ugh. I was out sick yesterday. Got hit with an evil stomach flue. Spent the night wrapped around the toilet waiting to die. Today it feels like my insides are bruised.

I was thinking - could you just convert him over to Outlook? Assuming you have MS Office installed?

Sorry about the flu!

if it was that easy, i would just switch him to eudora. (which i prefer) but he is a stogey and if he has been useing something for more than 6 months, its the end of the world if he has to switch to something else.

for an example.. he still uses symatec Q&A for word processing. (shudder)

I understand - it isn't that I'm beating the drum for Outlook, I just thought he might be comfortable "upgrading" to another MS product.

Good luck!

Isn't the "envelope" new mail icon enough for this guy? I may be teaching you how to suck eggs, but both Outlook and Outlook Express have this.

Using MS XP (may be different for other Windows versions, can't remember back a year :); Control Panel - Taskbar & Start Menu - Taskbar & Start Menu Properties - Customize, then select the icons you want. Should find the envelope you're looking for. Not gonna hit him over the head, but it suffices...hey whadya know, mine has just come up!
