Asking for additional money?

Should I or should not?

A client for whom I am doing SEO needed to boost his traffic for which I suggested him to add some more content. He wasn't sure whether additional content would benefit him. I suggested it would be good for him and offered to add some pages of content to his site without charging him anything extra. In my mind, I had thought of just adding about 50-100 pages to his earlier number of about 25. But now, the discussion has somewhat moved towards adding more content to the tune of about 400-500 pages to the site. I am thinking of telling him to pay extra for the additional pages I would add. Am not sure though.

He's a good client so far and has also hinted to let me work for additional site of him because of mine doing some minor changes for him for free, which might have cost him had he got done from someone else. Should I ask him for additional charges for adding more pages or I should do it for free hoping to get more business from him?

If any member is faced with similar situation, which option would you normally go with?

I can certainly see justifying a free hour or two for a good client. But 400 pages? If you just spend 10 minutes a page (highly unlikely) you will give away almost two weeks of work.

Remember, if they never complain about the price, you're not charging enough ;)

Yeh, definitely ask for more.

Just explain that when you offered, you were thinking along the lines of a few pages, but 400-500 is a lot of work, and you have other clients and itll take time ......

Over many years and many clients I have found that a client will regard your work and your worth in direct proportion to the charges you make.

If you work for nothing then work will have no value.

If you want to delve into the psychology of it look up Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance ;)

There are of course limits and at the other end you should always ensure good value for money.

I've known many small companies who have attempted to work for next to nothing to get larger contracts. None are still in business!

How are you generating these extra 400 pages?

Thanks for everyone's inputs. Pay is the option to go.

Nick : I've got hold of a student who is doing it for me for free.
