Caffeine: The main go-to in the tool box for many of us!

My serious caffeine journey began in college when I started a new job working the graveyard shift (11 PM-7:30 AM). I never drank coffee before then, but I learned REAL fast!

I didn’t like it much at first and found I needed to add quite a bit of sugar to make it more palatable. The first few days I relied on it too much to keep awake at work and sometimes got very jittery. Eventually, I figured out the right amount to keep me going without ODing on caffeine.

Over time (especially after going back to working normal hours again), my drinking habits have changed. I discovered flavored coffee (I especially like hazelnut), have used various forms/amounts of sweeteners, and started using creams (dairy, non-dairy).

Up until a few months ago, I would usually drink a couple of cup in the morning before going to work, then have another couple of cups in the office. Then I’d usually have a cup or 2 of decaf in the afternoon. At night, especially in the winter, I’d probably drink several more cups of decaf at home before going to bed.

Recently, I changed my routine quite a bit. Now I try to avoid caffeine for at least 60-90 minutes after waking up (your cortisol levels naturally peak during this time, so adding caffeine on top of that can lead to major spikes and crashes) as well as near meals (caffeine can block the absorption of many vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D). If I drink anything before going to the office, it’s decaf (or sometimes caffeine-free tea). Overall, I’ll usually have no more than 1 ½ cups of regular coffee. And all without any sweeteners or creams. (However, I do add cinnamon and nutmeg.)

In general, I’ve been feeling more relaxed throughout the day. No mid-afternoon drowsiness. I almost always fall asleep within a few minutes of going to bed and have been sleeping deeply throughout the night.

How about you? What’s your level of caffeine consumption and preferred intake (coffee, tea, soda, IV directly into your veins) method?

I also started the day with coffee, at least two cups, usually four. I recently changed that habit for exactly the reasons you mentioned. My Dr. told me that caffeine could be minimizing the effectiveness of a medication I'm instructed to take, "First thing in the morning and no food for an hour." So now I start with a coffee cup full of water and after about an hour go back to get the coffee. I like coffee but have only two cups a day on doctors advice, and my cup is on the small side.

Caffeine never kept me from sleeping but I sleep better with less of it. For work-time sipping I take water.

Had to give it up. Causing hypertension and elevated heart rate. Apparently I am very susceptible to the stimulant effects of caffeine. Can't take it in soda waters (coke, etc) and get funny looks when I ask for "caffeine free, please!").

Back in my youth---as a gigging musician---all that "caffeine nervous" made for some great guitar shredding, drum bashing or bass thumping...These days I can't drink coffee any longer---chlorogenic acid and tummy do not get along.

But I will never say no to a coffee toffee.

Is coffee really coffee any more?

Blood pressure was up and the doc suggested less wine and coffee, but there is so much misinformation out there. For example a recent article on news.com.au which was reprinted from nypost.com states “up to 400 mg of caffeine per day appears to be safe for most healthy adults”. But that is 400 milligrams which is 0.4 grams and there is about 20 grams in latte (made from beans) and about 2 grams in Nescafe (instant).

I drink coffee all day because I get to boil the water before I drink it, and it doesn't keep me awake. Sometimes when I can't sleep I make a coffee, then feel better and go to sleep.

We don't have town water but use tank water which is as fresh as one can get. Haven't drunk tap water without boiling it for more than 50 years.

That does not sound right. A typical cup of coffee contains tens of f milligrams, not grams, of caffeine. Even a 250ml can of Red Bull only contains 80mg.

I once was a ta trade show visiting the various trade stands, and out of courtesy, each gave me a cup of coffee: I consumed it with graceful thanks. After a few, and a few more, I realised something was going on, and my eyeballs felt they were out on stalks.
Never again did I consume so much coffee.
I will have the occasion cup of coffee about once a month, or when I fancy it.

I'm more of a tea drinker than coffee, and I don't touch fizzy drinks, such as soda. I gave up sugar back more than a lifetime ago of younger adults, and have never looked back. I find sugar gives a similar but different rush to caffeine. How anyone can consume a can of caffeine and sugar-rich fizz drink is beyond me! In addition, i'm not keen on sweet foods as i often find them too sweet.
The caffeine in tea is fine for me, and i'll consume different varieties with different levels: Black tea, green tea, rooibos, and Greek malotira are on my daily consumption. It all works fine for me: It's more of a thirst for liquid than about caffeine.

Impossible, unless you’ve discovered a coffee bean that is more than 50% caffeine.

I have one cup of plain tea in the morning, one of masala chai (made from scratch) in the afternoon. Is all.

Latest search results are saying that there is 50-90 mg in a cup of Nescafe.

So according to NYPost 6-7 cups of instant per day should be ok.
