There's a great deal of discussion around the use of AI, and the release of several AI tools online for testing purposes. Most of you by now have heard of ChatGPT, or DALL·E, and there are many others, but have you really thought about how it'll affect your business? Positive or negative.

As an introduction, Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on the field of writing and language processing. One of the most common applications of AI in writing is in natural language generation (NLG), which involves using algorithms and machine learning techniques to generate human-like text. This can be used to automatically generate news articles, social media posts, and even entire books. Imagine that!

Another area where AI has made an impact is in language translation. Machine translation algorithms can translate text from one language to another with a high degree of accuracy, making it easier for people to communicate and access information in different languages. I expect you've already used that.

AI can also be used in language processing tasks such as text summarization, which involves creating a shorter version of a longer text, or text classification, which involves categorizing text into different categories or labels. All done far more quickly than a human.

Overall, AI has the potential to greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of writing and language processing tasks, and it will likely continue to play a significant role in these areas in the future. That's all a big thing to take in.

I think we're talking about disruptive technology. [en.wikipedia.org...]

There are many examples of AI tools out there, and we all really need to be looking at this, especially for opportunities, as well as its impact.

We should all be really concerned about content generation from the deployment of AI, and how we can use it to our benefit.

I've already been testing the content generation, but it's been too early to say how that is going to work in search.

What are your thoughts?

AI does not exist without humans programming it. AI will be only as good as those who do the programming. Since humans are known to "make mistakes" an utter RELIANCE on AI could potentially lead to undesired results. If using AI one needs to stay on TOP of that ... and might be more work than just doing it right, the FIRST TIME.

Just a thought, based on my NEEDS for any kind of automation, of which there are none. Others might find benefits which do not apply to my requirements.

Was just following a discussion on this the other day in the short-term rental space. The poster is a real estate investor and he was playing around having ChatGPT write descriptions (to use on AirBNB) for his properties. The example he posted was pretty good (similar to the style of many other similar listings), but mostly lacked any emotional/personal tone.

I agree with what several other people commented- can be good to use as a base to get started, then have a human tweak it. But I can see that a lot of people are just going to use as-is- the same type of people who use machine language translations to create a "multilingual" web site.

I decided to play around a little bit myself- I found it extremely ironic that I had to solve a Captcha to prove I'm a human to use AI!

See similar commentary here:

[theregister.com...]

As word of students using AI to automatically complete essays continues to spread, some lecturers are beginning to rethink how they should teach their pupils to write.

Writing is a difficult task to do well. The best novelists and poets write furiously, dedicating their lives to mastering their craft. The creative process of stringing together words to communicate thoughts is often viewed as something complex, mysterious, and unmistakably human. No wonder people are fascinated by machines that can write too.

Also for fun, I asked it to write about when AI will take over the world and enslave humans.

It is not accurate or helpful to suggest that artificial intelligence (AI) will take over the world and enslave humans. AI is a tool that is developed and used by humans, and it is not capable of independently taking over the world or exerting control over humans.
Definitely sounds like a deflection to me!

Sure. But in the end it depends on who is reading it.

Everyone thinks differently and will follow the train of thought better with some authors.

An example of that is when I was living aboard a yacht without television and before computers. So I would buy 20 books at a time and explored different genres... 20 thrillers, 20 science fiction, etc at a time. Each batch would include several different authors and what I soon realised was that sometimes the highly rated authors were not the most enjoyable to read.

So perhaps the judging should be left to the public who reads them and not a panel of wanna-be authors, and especially not AI.

So true.

When I was in the seventh grade I used to buy pulp science fiction novels that were cranked out like one book a week. They had great covers and wildly different topics from book to book. I bought a vintage copy of one of my favorites off of eBay and was appalled by how bad it was, totally unreadable. :P

But, back on topic, AI SEO tools are already with us, even in our phones when we use Google map. How many people use a paper map anymore?

AI is just a tool that makes workers more productive, like the computer was when it entered the workplace in the 1980s.

Since AI is "reading the web" won't we soon have machines talking to other machines and the humans are left out of the equation?

If the web bulks up on AI generated text, won't AI be reinforced with AI input?

At some point, human inspiration will become a valued commodity... if only to those who actually know the difference!

AI SEO tools are already with us, even in our phones when we use Google map.

How can an online map be considered AI when all it has returned is a result from a street address/location?

But if some code can interpret whether word usage has been proper or not then AI might be something. For example, take the word "sanction" when used in differences contexts like:

A. Our sporting association has sanctioned two players for defaming the association, its members and the sport in general.
B. The following events are sanctioned by our sporting association as national ranking events.

Same word but two different meanings... actually opposite meanings. I had always used the B meaning but today all anyone hears is use of the A meaning.

On a lighter note, I get inundated by spammers using my feedback form to promote the use of AI blog writing software. Now they get an AI response (error message) that says "Sorry, but we prefer our copy to explain things properly!".

Me! But i'm probably in the minority. I also use Open Streetmap, Google and Bing maps, What3Words, too. I'm not in the least resistant to new tech; in fact, i embrace it, but I don't neglect the new technology of old.

I'm intrigued as to how best you might deploy the new technology.

I do sometimes.

Like when my computer doesn't fit in my back pocket. And there's no cell service for my phone.

And when I want to see things on a larger scale than my monitor can display.

And when I don't want to see all the distracting linked icons for Targets, McDonalds, and Costcos.

Me when out in the mountains :-)

I think AI is going to have a huge impact on the entire web publishing industry. Site owners spend their time and money to rank well on search engines. In many cases, users only find our sites when they are looking for information. If the AI simply gives them the information in text form (or voice) why would the user go through the additional stage of visiting a list of websites?

Remember when web directories were blown away by search engines... Are we now seeing search engines being replaced by AI?

No. We are seeing websites replaced by AI that the SEs are using to display their serps. :(

On the other hand, once AI can be addressed by the average user the same way as a user can access g, who needs g?

who needs g?

Exactly. It's just removing one step and getting right to the answer. It's going to be very interesting to see how this pans out. Also kinda terrifying.

Monetization is the key to all this, and that includes our own sites.
There are a lot of things to consider, as well as how we get traffic.
Just think about AdSense for one moment: If it ends up "answers" from the web, with no attribution or link, how will AdSense work. It won't, of course.
In addition, there is the important aspect of copyright. How will that work?

I think this whole concept is exciting, as well as terrifying, as Mack says.

It reacts to traffic jams and offers to redirect.
It can create a route according to your prompts.
That's AI.

AI is in our lives right now today and is so ubiquitous and seamless many of us haven't even noticed.

As I previously mentioned, it's not doing SEO, it's doing repetitive tasks to free you up to do more important things. It's like the computer when it was introduced into the workplace in the 80s, it's a productivity tool, it doesn't do your work.

A smoother ride and a more detailed Map thanks to AI [blog.google]
AI is a critical part of what makes Google Maps so helpful. With it, we’re able to map roads over 10 times faster than we could five years ago, and we can bring maps filled with useful information to virtually every corner of the world.

If all else fails, keep looping until you find a match. That is AI. No more and no less.

- AI images frightened artists at first, but artists just moved offline and do amazing things on real objects, like this [youtube.com...]

The best websites are generally written by people who enjoy the topic and are experienced in it, they'll go offline and continue doing it with or without the internet. It's access to those people AI is going to cost us all.
