Try www.vbulletin.com <-- if yo have mysql and php support, this is probably thebest piece of software available on the net.
You can see it in action at the forums at my site:

It's my understanding that the last few vestiges of the old software will disappear very soon. There isn't much left now -can't be. We moderators have been turning in our own "design specs" for custom board apps since May -more than a half-dozen of them were major.
We started out with one board, BoardPower (vbulletin was the runner-up, don't know why BP was selected). Everybody said "yeah, it's great" and then immediately started asking BT to tear off one fender and bolt on another. Besides these, there were at least two major problems -can't recall what- that developed soon after WebmasterWorld got hot-hot-hot and we started piling up the posts into the thousands. Several other serious problems were uncovered along the way. At any rate, huge chunks of code were abandoned and new logic added -all done on the fly.
Another Forum I've seen that is quite cheep (or maybe even free - can't remember now) is ASPBoard produced by [tippedcow.com...] - obviously this is Microsoft orientated so needs NT/2000 with IIS 4/5...but you can read that at their site... can't remember what platforms eshare Expressions was available for.

$200.00 plus I am paying someone else $157.00 to customize it (I just don't have the time to play around)
Seems like a decent bb however documentation is lacking.
Also you need MySql on your server to run it.
I need to add email notification on replies. Selected Perl
I have had the bb installed, all went well except the response rate of the installer. However he did do a good job on the install.
The adminstration functions and options are good and easy to manage.
I am happy, does not seem to need to much management and has alot of functionality.
