Mods ... This is a business issue of sorts, but if there is a better forum, please move it.

A CAUTIONARY TALE for those using GitHub as a repository/development area.

Updated Game designer Jason Rohrer has had a bad week, discovering that his 23 code repositories representing 15 years of development and community contributions were wiped from GitHub.

A GitHub spokesperson told The Register: "This account was mistakenly flagged by our spam algorithm, and we restored it promptly after learning of the mistake. We work hard to make GitHub a safe and inclusive place to host developer content and are constantly working on improvements to our spam filtering."

A reminder why you never put all eggs in one basket! Your dev machine, its backups, and your online repositories/action points should all be protected from AI filters which are, after all, created by humans, but never watched over by humans. (Nature of the beast).

I thought Microsoft bought up GitHub and all its repositories late last year. I don't know what changes they have made or might make to the contents.

GitHub continues to operate as an open source community under MS ... this take down was due to some sort of "spam" filter (whether it was actioned by software alone or just because somebody complained is not clear). The concern is that whatever reporting/filtering process is involved COULD take down years of work.

And with the EU copyright directive, you can be sure to hear about this kind of issues more and more often.

By the way, one more reason to repeat the importance of backups ... Never assume that, because you host your data with a third party service, which "certainly" has its own backup system, that your data are safe.

Also, in this case, you can notice that Github was able to restore all the data, so they were not "really" deleted.

And to find positive points, now people know about this game developer :)
