The NY Times has an interesting piece about ad blocker testing, and it's about improving performance as much as removing the ads themselves.

The results: For a number of websites that contained mobile ads with a lot of data, web page data sizes decreased significantly and load times accelerated enormously with ad blockers turned on. Wonder if the test was done with an older iPhone or the latest and greatest? The newest ones have a smaller battery. :)
