Forget the software. Read the forums, and some other news and informational websites. Learn SEO, and apply it the best that you can.

The only software that should be used is for checking search engine rankings.

agerhart is right, and unless you have a lot of sites, you can check rankings by hand. Brett has some seo tools to use online (scroll down the page)

Those are very useful, particularly the web page size checker and the keyword density analyzer.

The best tool of all is your keyboard - go to the search engines you're interested in and look for yourself at what's working well.

I found WW and SEW the most usefull software there is. Just trying to keep up on the reading/learning here should be classified as a part time/full time job.

A nice tool to have is LinkSurvey <snip> if you need to improve your link popularity.

But I agree: forget most of the software. I tried some doorway pages builder just for the fun of it - they are not even worth the time you spend downloading that crap :)
